The September 12, 1942, the Laconia, a converted cruise transport for troops, was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-156, commanded by Werner Hartenstein. 1621 people died, and survived 1104.
The ship was carrying mostly women, children, wounded soldiers and Italian POWs. Having sunk the ship, Hartenstein was supposed to leave the survivors to drift, but instead made the incredible decision to save as many lives as he could.
